Network cable connection problem

We have a win 98 client pc connected to a xp host by crossover cable. It has been working fine until recently when for no apparent reason the host XP pc seems to think the cable is disconnected. It isn't of course. I have borrowed a network hub and connected the win 98 pc to it and the network adaptor responded.
When I connected the XP as well it showed no responce at all. Nor did it when connected on it's own. I have uninstalled the XP adapter (Via Rhine 11) and re-installed but to no avail.

Any ideas please.

It looks like the network card is u/s. Try a replacement card £10 or so.
