Netgear wireless drops after shutdown

I have a Netgear DG834g wirless router. Until recently this had been working fine. Now, whenever I switch on my remote PC, I have to go to the router, unplug it and plug it back in (reboot the router) to enable the wireless connection between router and remote PC.

I note the "wireless" symbol on the front of the router is not lit before I do this. Once connected, it stays connected and there are no problems. What is happening after I close the wireless connection down to require a reboot next time, and how can this be fixed?

ISP is Pipex.
