Why is it that even after following Microsoft's detailed instructions on setting a network up, I can't see or transfer any information from a laptop to a desktop until I add Netbeui, and then its fine. The workgroup name is the same and I have allocated individual IP addresses but it makes no difference! Microsoft makes no mention of this, just TCP/IP.

Is netBIOS over TCP/IP enabled or disabled? If it's disabled this is probably why you can't share files until you install netBEUI.

What OS are you using?

Do you mean "Internet Protocol TCP/IP"? If so, this is enabled. The laptop is on XP Home SP2, the desktop on XP Pro SP2.

I do mean netbios over TCP/IP.

Go to the properties of your network connection - click on TCP/IP and choose properties, click on advanced and then the WINS tab - on there you will see the netBIOS settings
