i have a network which has a win xp laptop and a win xp pc (both home edition) linked together with a crossover cable. I can transfer files and use ics fine but when i start the command prompt and put in (for example) net send 192.168.0.1 hello it tells me that the message alias could not be found (net helpmsg 2273). I have also tried going into the computer managment right clicking on the shared folders and selecting send console message but that doesnt work either.

Does anyone know what is wrong with it?

PS. I dont really want to download any new programs

Enable the Messenger Service in services.msc via Administrative Tools from the Control Panel.

This in itself may cause other problems [it has been exploited] and by default it is disabled in WIN XP SP2.
