Need to upgrade office network

look after our charities IT. We have an old shuttle (2.8Ghz but is 5 years old and somewhat slow) with Ubuntu server and a messy 100MB ethernet cabled system with 54g wireless for laptops.

What sort of spec do we need in a new server? It is used for backups and runs apache for a Client Management System. We also do file sharing with it. A separate DG router serves the ADSL and a basic switch gives us connectivity.

An idea about a configurable switch which can also serve the ADSL and possible wireless with an option to move 100MB/s to GB/s networking. We need two subnetworks for some public used PCS which must be separate from the Office stuff but through the same ADSL.

What parts of the network would benefit from GB/s?

Sounds like you need to hire a network engineer to discuss your needs and budget for server requirements.

Gigabit switches are cheap enough now so use them with Vlans to spilt the networks up
