NAS Drive configured to Raid 1

Connected directly to the Router via Ethernet Port.

Connected directly to the PC via Home-plugs.

Connected Wirelessly to the Laptop.

Both the PC and the Laptop are individually protected by the same Antivirus program.

The question: Should a Virus or Ransom Ware penetrate either the PC or the Laptop, while they are all connected to the Network. Which parts of the network will be infected?

God that's taken long enough to get onto the Forum.

It's been playing up since mid afternoon.

Potentially, all of them - including the mirror.

The Cryptolocker ransomware trojan for example will attempt to encrypt files on all networked devices.

If you're using the NAS as a backup then you should reconsider your backup strategy. A true backup is held on a device that's not permanently connected.

So, Raid 1 on a NAS Drive, is only an insurance policy against the failure of one of the Drives you've just installed in it.

The setup, above, was a projection of what I might do in the future.

Currently my Backup is an External Drive which is only connected for the period that the Backup is being run.

Looks like I shall have to start planning once again

Yes, that's correct - it provides redundancy in case of failure of one the drives. It shouldn't be considered as a proper backup because if you delete a file or a virus takes hold then those changes will be instantly mirrored to the twin.

RAID 1 also increases read performance.
