As a total novice could someone please explain to me why my pc attempts to connect to the internet via my dial up connection seemingly at its own choice and how I can prevent this. I have not set any automatic updates that I am aware of.

Could be anti-virus or something trying to update itself.

Or it could be spyware. Try running Ad-aware click here and Spybot click here

Have you check that you do not have any rogue diallers lurking in your system. Run Adware, spybot and virus check your system i am assuming you have these programs.

If not click here and download this to prevent anything dialling out unless you allow it the site is in german but installs in english click here
