My PC crashes when connecting to net

Just recently I've been having trouble with my PC, and connecting to the internet. When I connect, the modem starts dialling normally, but then produces a beeping noise, and then my whole system crashes (can't even 'ctrl-alt-del' to restart)
This happens at any time, mainly when I have just turned my PC on, but it will happen 2-3 times before it will actually connect and not crash!

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?
I use Dialer 2000 version 2.1.0 build 1035(have used for 2 years with no problems previously) and windows ME
Thanks!

Can you think of anything that has changed recently... any upgrades installed.... tweaking?

Have you checked the modem in the Device Manager... is it operating correctly?

Have you tried re-installing the software that came with the modem?

Go into device manager and look for IRQ or Memory conflicts

There are three possbilities...

1) Your drivers need updating or reinstalling.

2) There is a Porn Dialler on yuor system

3) There is an IRQ conflict between your modem and a main component of the PC.
