my laptop switches itself off

For a couple of months now, my laptop has been making a worrying rattling noise. The noise starts after booting up and logging on (XP SP2) and lasts for a couple of minutes. Could this be the hard drive and should I get a new one (the current one is about three years old)?
For the past couple of days the laptop has been switching itself off but boots up again alright. Any ideas what this could be and can it be connected to the rattling noise.
I have an e-machines M5116 with 40gb hard drive and 512mb ram.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

My guess is that the noise is the cooling fan. This gives a guide to what is involved click here. However a failing hard drive is a possibility. Listen to some hard drive noises here click here

I would agre If you have a Rattle and it switches off I would suspect the cooling fan.
