Hi, I have a 14 month old Pavilion laptop and after watching many dvds it has stopped working. It tells me there is no disk in the drawer but of course there is, i have tried 4 differant dvds to play but it wont play them, or see them everything else seems ok on the laptop. I am running windows 8....Thanks

It is quite possible that the drive has failed, just like any other piece of hardware it can go wrong without warning. They are cheap to replace or you could get an external plug-in device.

You could try a Disc Cleaner first to clean the laser but if that fails then you are looking at a replacement

Thanks for your quick answer, isnt 14 months a short time for the hardware to go wrong though, this wasn't a cheap laptop,,,Val

Hardware can fail at anytime. Your laptop may not have been cheap but some of the components are and your DVD drive is one of them. If it has been playing and suddenly stopped then it most likely has failed but I would try cleaning it first.

You could also take a look at CD/DVD Drive Suddenly stopped working

Is it showing in device manager?

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41 Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. (This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

click here XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Thanks everyone for your answers, Mike no it wont play a cd either. I have been using it to watch a series of videos for months with no problem I had to download a program to play them because windows 8 does not have the capability, I hate and detest windows 8, too late now though. when you guys answer me could you possibly use easy instructions because I am a complete novice with computers even though I have used them for a few years now. My next question is would it be cheaper to buy an external dvd player to watch movies on rather than take the laptop to be fixed....Or can my dvd player that I use with the TV be somehow connected to this laptop....Hope I have made sense...Thanks again.....Val

HP solutions,

Have a careful read of this and if you feel confident enough follow instructions.

Hi, The drive shows up but it tells me there is no disk in it..Val

Either

  1. bad disk -try other disks

  2. bad laser - sometimes ok for CDs not good for DVDs etc.

  3. loose connection cable - try pushing cable fully home on motherboard and drive

Unlikely you will easily be able to link TV DVD player to laptop

It's easy to replace the DVD drive yourself. You remove a screw and it just slides out.

If you tell use the exact Pavilion model number we can see how much replacement units are and link to the correct Pavilion Service and Maintenance Guide on how to do it. It's very easy.

External USB DVD drives are cheap enough, £20+, but not always quite so convenient if you move around or go out and about and want to take it
