My computer freezes when connected to the internet

My computer keeps freezing when connected to the internet. It doesn't always happen but it happens VERY often. Sometimes within a couple of minutes of connecting. I can disconnect and reconnect but it just happens again.
It never freezes when not connected.
I had Win 98 but changed to XP but the problem still happens I also tried changing the modem.

Was the computer purchased recently?

If it was then it might be worth a look in the BIOS at the IRQ for your modem (you can get the IRQ from System Information). If this is set to anything other than the BIOS default, then set it to the BIOS default.

Could be a isp fault/poor connection or more likly Ie6 playing up. Try IE6 repiar by going into the Add/Remove programes select Ie6 hopefully your will have the option to repair the IE6 here if not its a download or Install from a ISP Disk.

Do you happen to have Zone Alarm ?
