'My Computer' Crashing

Quite often, when I try to access 'My Computer' (especially if trying to access the contents of a Cd) I get a 'This program is not responding' error. If I then click on 'End Now', the computer crashes & I have to do a restart by switching off as, apart from my wallpaper, all icons have disappeared (including the Start button and the system tray). To make matters worse, when I switch on again the system starts to load but then begins to do a 'checking file system' but it only gets part way through this before crashing again (it gets to about 55% checked and then stops). However, if I cancel the check before it begins, Windows opens OK. I am running Windows XP Home. Any ideas.

Start, Run, type in

sfc /scannow

and click OK. You may be asked to insert your Windows CD.
