is my cd-rw drive kaputt?

The CD re-writer on my computer seems to be dead.It all starred when I was writing to CD (using Nero) and it said there was a tracking or alignment fault and therefore couldn't finish writing to the CD. the next time I used the drive, it wouldn't read anything you put in it. In control panel it says it is working OK, but when you put a disk in, it doesn't do anything. Go to My Computer and click on the drive and it says it is empty, even if there's a disc in it. Now when I boot my computer up, the CD writing/read light flashes red and green adn the computer won't go on beyond the stage of detecting IDE drives until you open the CD-RW drive. It then continues to boot OK, recognising the CD-RW as it does.
Anyone have any ideas

go in to device manager and delete it, re-boot and let windows re-install it as new hardware
