Must unplug PC before powering on

Randomly but frequently the PC won't power on. If I unplug it from the mains, wait 5 minutes, plug in then it powers on. Windows XP Pro. Intel motherboard and processor.

I had an identical problem and replacing the PSU cured it. My original PSU was 300 watts and my PC had two optical drives, three hard drives as well as the usual graphics, sound cards and other power hungry bits and the PSU wasn't up to it.

There is a site on the web that helps you assess what size PSU you need but Im not sure where it is now. It recommended at least a 400 watt PSU so I bought a 550 watt PSU from Ebuyer for £9.99 and the problem was solved.
