music storage seeks advice

Having moved on from desk-top to laptop, I wish to house my music collection on an external drive. What I'm not conversant with is the method of it's travel to that drive from a download source or manually installing from CDs. Will this drive require it's own media player or does this simply download to laptop windows media player and then backed up to the external drive? If anyone finds time to explain this silver-surfer will be one step closer to his goal of transfering music to a music system (wacs700)by Philips around the home and garden.

It's just an external disk drive; nothing more complicated than the mechanical equivalent of a flash memory stick. Plug it in; see it in My Computer; treat it like any other drive or partition. Set WMP to place you rip folder if you want to; add it to your monitored folders to include these files in the library. That's all.
