Music sample streaming from external HD

Hi

Any computer musicians and or external HDD experts out there?

I am running out of space on my data drive for music samples. Are external HDs quick enough in transferring the data to allow them to be used efficiently in samplers (I am using Computer Music CM Play and DS404). Do I need firewire rather than USB2.

I'd like to get a 500Gb or 1Tb HD but I understand these may be slower in transfering data than small external HDD - is this the case and if so would it be worth me waiting until these become more efficient or is this unlikely to happen

Thanks in advance for the help
