Multivision Laptop -no drive found

Hello, a friend of mine has a multivision laptop about 12 months old, it suddenly closed down, and when booting up now it says no HDD detected.
we played around a bit with the bios, when I hit "auto detect" it found the drive but then lost it again when we booted. we tried "default settings" and it was fine for about 5 boot up runs, by the time he got it home it was back to no HDD. We had the 2 covers off the back but no sign ot the HDD, we thought of checking the connections. He is going to replace the CMOS Batt to see if that helps, but the clock seems to be keeping good time, anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for any help
