Multiple problems

I tried to instal a Netgear wireless PCI card, but my PC locked up on re-boot. Despite several attempts (different PCI slots) havent got anywhere. The slots were working & the card worked in another PC. Netgears help said it could be the BIOS (but it is the latest) however Ive just tried other cards in the slots to discover although it detects 'new hardware', using the manufacturers utility after installing them it maintains 'card not found' when I use the . Windows wireless tool sees my network, but wont connect. Next I've had a 'please register Windows' message, & my AVG says please re-instal as it's damaged. I've now flashed the BIOS (same version) but still made no headway, other than after instaling the card the pc ran (card not found, network didnt work) for 5 mins before locking up. What is going on? spec - 2.8Ghz, !gb RAM, XP pro. Help much appreciated.
