Mulitbooting with an external HD

I have a pc with an AMD 64 bit processor, but am currently running win XP home. It seems silly to have a 64 bit system and not use it, so I was thinking of using an external HD with Win 64 bit operating system, so that I can get it all up and running without risking losing data from my main HD by multibooting.

Can anybody out there tell me if this can be done?, and if so how?, and which software should I use to do it?

Many thanks in advance for anyone who can spare the time to offer me the help I need.

I would suggest that your first step is to check if your systems bios can boot from an external drive. If it can you should be able to do what you want. There are also boot managers which can direct a pc to boot from different partitions and presumably other hard drives.
