I have stopped using messenger in favour of Skype but when I did use it messages such as the one you describe often related to the version of messenger which the other person in the conversation were running.

You may be up to date but they could be running an older version without all the features.

You probably prefer MSN Messenger,But whoever you are talking to may be using the up-dated version of Windows Messenger,So might be a small conflict between the two of them,

Does it say what features are not available?

If so can you see what is required by you to get those features, and also make sure that who ever you are talking to has the same thing.

I had to download and install journal viewer for some features to work.
