MSI 745 Ultra MoBo

My friend has just replaced his MoBo as his other had fried. Clean install of XP & SP1 and when he restarts his PC from windows it restarts and says it can't find the boot record. Power off the system and start again and it starts fine. Sometimes it finds the IDE devices on IDE1 and other times it doesn't.

Anyone else had the same problem with this MoBo.

He's running 1.4 Athlon, 256Mb Crucial PC2100, 41.2Gb IBM HD, GeForce 3 Ti200, Creative SC & network card for broadband.

Finding the IDE devices is a POST operation - nothing to do with the OS. It sounds to me that this mobo is faulty. I suggest you speak to the supplier and negotiate a replacement. If the replacement is the same make and model, you should get away without having to reinstall your OS, but, thereagain, if the original is fault, it may be safer to start from scratch.
