When I looked at this,I noted that on General Tab. Diagnostic Start up was selected with all boxes ticked.
My question is should normal Start up be selected, and if so can I do this with out running into problems.
i am aware that msconfig should be messed with novices like me

Mine is in selective start up,probably because I have a few items unticked in start up.In start up you should only have things ticked that help with the running of your computer,Any thing else on there you can untick,Press apply Ok.And when your computer restarts a box will open just tick the little square and press ok .Like you said msconfig should not be messed about with but you have to learn sometime and as long as you are careful you should be Ok,If you untick something and maybe realise that you need it to open in start up just go back in and tick it again remembering to press apply ok again.

Do you mean Selective Startup with all the boxes ticked? This does the same as Normal Startup so it's safe to change it.

Earthsea yes all boxes are ticked in Selective Startup.
Thanks for replies thus far
