MS Word - printed watermark problem

My son is doing some IT Homework, he has created a word document with a 'fill background'effect.
When he clicks on print preview, there is no background, same applies when the document is actually printed. When I've looked in help it states that in order to print a background the 'printed watermark' command has to be clicked in 'format/background', but this command is greyed out. Has anyone any ideas on how to restore this command? The PC is using Office XP Professional.

Many Thanks in advance.

I just got it to work following the instructions in Word help and 'create a watermark'.

Have you perhaps missed something?

I took a printed page
hit the hide/show in view
selected a square shape and filled with colour
hit the hide/show and there they were.
Also showing in print preview.

In word go to tools/options/print and make sure background colour and images has been ticked.
