MS Win XP OEM and ELU query

  Chris the Ancient 16:31 23 Sep 07

My colleague bought a new laptop bare-bones and asked me to install Win XP Pro on it for him (it's what he also uses for work). It was an authentic MS disc with all the appropriate and installed with no problems.

Then came the sticky problem. He asked that if he bought a bare-bones desktop machine, could he use the same copy of XP Pro on that machine as well? The rationale was that he bought an OEM disc which system builders use and he imagined that they installed the same disc on all machines that they built.

So can he use the same OEM disc for more than one PC?

No, as Microsoft would have it.

The OEM licence expires on the demise of the one machine supposed to have it installed.

Each time it is installed it has to be activated.
This may be possible by telephone, but there must be a limit to the number of fibs that can be told!

Apart from the illegality, it would be asking for trouble to have two machines online or seeking updates when both had the same licence number.
