MS Update Problems - Possible Solution

Been a lot of threads on users not being able to get on MS Update.

this might be a possible solution from click here

Microsoft made the changes after the problems caused by the Blaster worm which was programmed to stage a distributed denial of service attack on the Windows update site. Some Windows users map a list of URLs in their hosts file - which resides at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS - to the localhost's IP ( to redirect URLs locally before the system looks for it on the internet. Thus if a site named is mapped to on a person's computer, ads from this server on any website visited by the individual will be blocked.

Windows users requesting updates from Microsoft are now routed to one of the Akamai servers, However, Akamai is a well-known host for advertising services, so many who use the hosts file to redirect URLs locally also block all Akamai servers. Fergus said deleting this one line - - from the hosts file would ensure that updates were not blocked.

You can get onto Windows Update but usually through a link from a third party website, for instance one describing Microsoft's problems and providing a link to Update.

Another method is to install BigFix (click here) which works in the same way as Windows Update.

It will list any updates, patches etc for all Microsoft products on your system and you can download them from BigFix.

BigFix, which is very simple to configure and use, was very strongly featured by Evesham Computers on its new systems because it made life so much easier for its customers.
