MS Flight Simulator 2004 - lost sound

The following problem was still there after an uninstall and then full install:-

Having created a flight, the program opens at the end of the runway as normal except there is no sound of the engine nor ATC (the ATC visual panel is there as normal).

At the top right hand corner in red is "Sound off" but in "SETTINGS" under the "Sound" tab everything is ticked and all the sliders are at their default positions.

Back on the runway view I noticed that right clicking on the scenery brings up a menu box with 3 of the items greyed out, namely "Undock window", "Close window" and a ticked "Hide menu bar".

The sound on other programs is working perfectly.

I'd appreciate any members' comment/advice/guidance, please as I'm a bit baffled. Thanks in advance.
