i have a speadsheet with names in one of the columns. As some of the names appear several times (several rows) how can i reduce the appear of each person's name to only once - and ideally count how many individual names appear in the spreadsheet?

select the column of names, go to Data->Filter->Advanced Filter.

select Filter list in place and Unique records only

click ok

This will show you just one occurence of each name. You can now copy this to a new sheet if you want to create a list of unique names.
