Press F8 at boot up and you should get a menu.

As per Diodorus Siculus and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. This is about as close to DOS as you can get in XP. Unless someone knows differently.

I understand that you can run from start/run/cmd in the command prompt window) And Dos programmes will run from here.

Microsoft XP doesn't have DOS. It has a "command prompt" option and this is about as close to DOS as it comes. Alot of DOS programs still won;t work from this mode either.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, I'm not sure if there is a way around it either.

If you boot with a Win98 floppy it will take you into ms-dos.
