MS Access database & Word

Office 2000 running on Win XP home
512Mb. Toshiba Sat pro laptop
I maintain records in an access database and send letters from word, using mailmerge. This has worked very well for over a year.
Recently, invoking mailmerge from word has either stopped working, or runs so slowly that it is virtually useless.
I am not aware of any software alterations other than routine patches. Hardware runs fine.
Any ideas where to start troubleshooting the problem?

There is a possibility that the DB has become bloated. Have you looked at the size lateley. It would do no harm to to a compact and repair. Just a thought.

It's 23MB. I'll try that.

It brings it down to 1.3MB!
Now I get 'waiting for access to accept DDE commands"

Googling that last phrase came up with the suggestion that renaming the database breaks the DDE link, and gives the option to remake. I've done this, and it no longer hangs. I can live with this and remake the links as necessary.
