Mpeg decoder cards

When DVD drives first became available, it was recommended that you use a separate Mpeg decoder card to watch movies. Do recent graphics cards make this unnecessary?

I think its the movie software that makes the difference. I have a rather basic setup (600Mhz Athlon and a basic video card) with no separate MPEG decoder, but I am able to watch movies satisfactorily using the software that came with my Sony DVD burner.

You still need DVD software to be able to watch DVD movies on your PC, but that usually comes with your DVD drive.
