Mp3's and dBpowerAMP Music Converter

I have recently put most of my music collection onto my hard drive in mp3 format, 160 bit rate. This comes to about 8gb, but Im now thinking I should have put it at 192!

looking at other threads the dBpowerAMP Music Converter software was recommended - i tried converting a 160 bitrate song to 192, this worked and sounded fine. If I convert my collection up to 192 would the quality be the same as if I had downloaded my cd's originally to 192?

Cheers

The 'usual' bitrate is 128k (a balance between quality and file size) Can you tell the difference between 160k and 192k?

All of my music is either 90k or 64k as a .wma or 128k as an mp3. and they all sound O.K. to me.

As for your original question, I can only suggest a 'suck it and see' approach.

After some intense listening I couldnt notice any difference between 160 and 192! Found on another website that cd quality is 172, so guess there is no need for 192, wasted space!

I use variable bit rate where possible, rather than a fixed bit rate. It depends on the type of music I'm encoding. And for ripping I use CDEX click here

Something else you might like to try is MP3gain. This is a utility to 'normalise' volumes once you've extracted you're MP3 files.
You can get it from click here

When you convert to 160, information already lost, there is no way to get information back to covert 160 song to 192. If you want 192, you need to produce it use original wav files. You can compare 160 and 192, both generated from original wav, you can find difference if you have really good music ears.

Mp3 is a lossy format (unlike zip), when information lost, there is absoutrly no way to get back. So, if you want to store music in mp3 format, use as high bitrate as possible. The only way of not lossing any thing is store them in wav format.
