Surface Pro 5 News - release date, UK price, features, specs
My new MP3 player runs solely from SD memory cards.
Called the 'Amethyst P1' , it's from 'Steepletone' and is a superb-looking and playing little device. (I bought two of them!)
No software came with it because it's supposed to be Plug n Play.
However, via a USB Data Connection cord, you're supposed to be able to drag/drop files.
Problem is, when I connect it to my computer nothing is registering in Windows Explorer.
Clearly, it's not being recognised as an external device, so I can't drag/drop.
I've a number of USB ports, all working perfectly, but switching ports with the Amethyst doesn't make any difference.
I bought two of these little gems, as I say, but same happens with both. What a nuisance!
I'm running XP Home, SP2...
Do I have to find a driver for the Amethyst or can someone tell me what I'm missing?
Steepletone don't seem to know anything!
1. does your pc see a usb device when you plug in the device?
2. is there new drive letter seen in explore withy the drive plugged in?
3. you may have to format the SD card before its seem in explorer
4. have you got a card reader in your machine and can you plug the sd card direct to the card reader to drag and drop files.
Hi..thanks for the replies
I don't have a card reader at the moment.
For the time being, I use my friend's to add MP3's to an SD card and then to the Amethyst.
Even if I did have a reader, I still should be able to drag/drop via the USB cord supplied with the Amethyst.
As I said, nothing happens at all when I connect - no drive letter chosen etc.
Since there's no 'recognition' or designating of new drive letter, then formatting an SD card while it's in the Amethyst is impossible anyway.
Steepletone are not the actual manufacturers, just distributors and Googling 'Amethyst' brings no joy...grrrr!
Any other ideas?
Refresh USB Ports
Use Drive clean up to remove USB device drive info from the registry
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.
Hi Fruit Bat...
Many thanks for taking time to reply
'Drive Clean' worked perfectly and the Amethyst (with SD card inserted) now registers in Windows Explorer as 'SD CARD', so result!
However: the Amethyst is capable of handling up to a 2GB SD card.
I'm managing to drag/drop just over 1Gb MP3 files but when I try to add more I get a window message saying:
'Directory/file cannot be created'.
I've tried it with three new 2Gb SD cards (all different makes)with the same result...
Any idea why that is?
After doing a bit of searching, best I can come up with is that 2Gb SD cards need to be formatted to FAT32 to allow 2Gb of MP3 files to be stored.
If this is so, then the only way I can think to do this is:
1) Connect the Amethyst with SD card inserted
2) Right-click the drive in Windows Explorer and choose 'Format'.
I'm assuming XP Home SP2 automatically formats in FAT32...My main drives are NTFS...
Is all the above correct or is there a better way?
but XP usually formats NTFS
when you have selected format, in the file system box just select FTA32
