MP3 Music files

I thought a CD can hold max of 80 minutes of audio. I got an audio CD which has MP3 music files totalling about 180 minutes .
Is this because of MP3 format?

Yes. A CD can hold 80 mins of standard audio that a normal CD player can recognise. An MP3 CD can only be played on a PC, CD player that has MP3 playback and some DVD players. You can probably fit about 10 times the amount on the disc if you use MP3, but remember that only PCs and CD/DVD players with MP3 playback can play it.
