Mozilla Firefox problem

I have just downloaded and installed Firefox following all the rave reviews, but every time I try to access a Web site, I get an alert message stating " Web site URL> could not be found. Please check the name and try again." I have tried all sorts of different sites and get the same message, have uninstalled and reinstalled it and have checked that the connection settings are the same as for IE, which works fine. I have a broadband connection through a cable modem that is connected to a router. Am I doing something stupid? Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you have a firewall? have you allowed firefox access?

Yes, and no! I knew I was doing something stupid! Thanks for coming back so quickly with a spot-on diagnosis.
