I downloaded the add-on called Lightening from tinyurl.com and its file name is “ lightening-0.5-tb-win.xpi “. I have downloaded it to my desktop but cannot open it. I have tried “open with” and chosen Mozilla Firefox, and tried to open it with Firefox on and off. I have windows 98SE. What did I do wrong?

Have you tried using Mozilla Sunbird instead? Mozilla are apparently working on an integrated calendar for Firefox, something like MS Outlook I guess. I find Sunbird very good, though I mostly use Palm Desktop, as I have a Palm Lifedrive too. Outlook is pants.

This extension is for the email client Thunderbird.

I have it installed and it is great.

It will not work with Firefox as it integrates with Thunderbird.

You can use a stand alone version called Sunbird - download from same site:
