Movie Software

I am after some advice regarding movie creation software.

Soon I will be videoing my local rugby clubs games and after I want to put all the clips together into a little highlights package.

I managed to do it last year using Windows Movie Maker, but lets face it, the software is very basic.

Whilst it made the highlights go together seemlessly, when it came to adding the score graphic in the top corner and the team sheet at the beginning, all it would allow me to do and text which most of the time got lost on the background.

Can anyone recommened some software that will allow me to add graphics over the top of the video, rather than just text?

It doesn't have to be free, I just need suggestions.

Cheers.
