movie compression

could anybody tell me if there is any software available that will compress a movie so it will fit on a 700mb or 900mb v-cd disk and still be viewable on a dvd player. cheers

TMPGenc is good : click here You want to compress the avi to mpeg1 for vcd.

you can now buy dvd players that can play divx movies , so no need to split to 2 cd's if you have one . but if you want to encode to vcd and its longer than one disk (it goes by mins rather than size) you also need an audio decompressor . i use either the one that comes with avi2vcd or i found another program yesterday avi compression converter but that wont encode to vcd . as michellec says tmpgenc is good and also winmpg video converter . if your talking about actually backing up your own dvd's (which you are arent you !!!!) use dr divx , thats freeware too or easy divx .
