Mouse Problem

  denali 23:59 03 Jan 04

Anyone help me please?
For the past few days my mouse has had a mind of its own everytime I log on.
It doesn't move, and when it does, it is all over the place. It has just taken me ten minutes to get the pointer in the right position to get into this forum I am running win 98se. It is fine when I am not on the web
Thank you

Is it an Optical

  denali 00:07 04 Jan 04

Please bear with me. This will tell you how naive I am. What is an Optical?

One with a light at the bottom instead of a ball

PS if it's got a light try using a white A4 paper as a mouse matt

Also if it is a cordless one, it may need a new battery. :o(

There is no light on it. Underneath it says PS/2
compatible mouse

it sounds more like a software problem if it is only happening when you use the internet.

woodchip may have logged off, so I'll try to help if I can. When you look under the mouse you will see a circle of plastic that holds the rubber ball in place. Turn this to the right or left and it will come away and release the ball.

Look inside and you will see two, maybe three rollers. They are probably covered in fluff and crud. Us a cocktail stick to scrape this off and a cotton bud soaked in warm water to give the rollers a good clean. You don't need to disconnect your mouse to do this but it's better to turn off your PC first.

Give this a try and post back to let us know how you get on please. j.
