Over the past few days the mouse cursor occasionly flys all over the screen, and brings up the start menu amongst others. This lasts for three or four seconds, and then returns to normal.
Any ideas?

Firstly you need to eliminate a virus and do a full virus scan.

Is it A ps2 type or Usb mouse/wireless?? Is your Hard drive/Cdrom (CDRW drives)being accessed at that moment in time ? and Which O/S google search suggests its commonly down to the mouse driver..

One of your friends may have inflicted you with a joke program which does this.

Email received 'Thanks for the ideas, I have done a virus scan, came up clear, it is just a standard ps2 mouse and has been fine for a year, I suspect a virus, but if I cant find it I cant fix it.'

Damaged windows files were at fault, I ran a windows repair from the XP cd-rom and all is now working fine.
