Mouse Behaviour

I have MS XP Home & the behaviour of my mouse has changed . I must have somehow altered a setting but for the life of me I cannot find out what so that I can reverse things & get back to normal. The mouse is configured with the left button as the primary button to click, select, drag etc. & the right button as the secondary for right clicking to obtain the options menu & other tasks. Recently however things changed & I find that if I left click a Folder the Search Results window opens. To actually open the folder I have to right click & then choose the Open option in the drop down menu to view the contents. This applies to all other folders within the main one. Once the files within the individual folder are revealed they can be opened in the normal way by left clicking. Is there a cure for this? Needless to say I have tried System Restore & changing from right hand use to left, but behaviour is just the same in reverse
