Motherboard U/S?

A friend has an emachines PC running WinXP Home, which is now out of warranty (Typical!!) Lately the CD/R drive (Samsung)has refused to function, despite it being listed as OK in Device Manager. So I replaced it with a new one (Novatech)but XP won't recognise that at all.The drive does power-up tho'. Thinking that XP was corrupt (System restore wouldn't work either),I re-formatted the HD. Now it's even worse!! If the Keybpord and Mouse are connected the PC freezes at the emachines logo screen (before XP starts) so that I can't do anything. If the keyboard and mouse are not connected, the PC starts up as normal, but I can't do anything without them! I've even tried an alternative keyboard and mouse but with the same results. Help!!
