Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me/confirm if this CPU "AMD Phenom II X4 955 BLACK 3.2GHz CPU 8MB Cache Retail Socket AM3" will fit/be suitable for the Asus M3N78 Pro Mobo which is AM2/AM2+? According to the Asus CPU support info the two are compatible with the correct bios installed. I have searched for more info but get conflicting answers. I am now confused? I hope one of you more knowledgeable people than I, in these things, can enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

Processor AM2+/AM3 can be installed on the AM2+ Mainboard (with Update BIOS)
but AM2+ Processor can not be installed on the Mainboard AM3.

MAT ALAN,

Thanks for your replies, it would appear that an AMD Phenom II X4 955 AM3, will fit in to an M3N78 Pro Mobo AM/AM2+ socket!

The only thing to bear in mind is that you need an AM3 socket for DDR3 memory. So you won't be able to use the latest type of RAM.

Hudson,

Thanks for this info. I presume that the Phenom II X4 955 is ok with DDR2 memory? If so, what is main/worst drawback with pairing the two?

  Hudson 22:37 22 Mar 10

Yes, DDR2 will be fine. The only drawback would be that DDR2 is not capable of the higher data rates of DDR3. In practice, I'm not sure whether there's much difference at the moment, but in future we can expect to see faster and faster DDR3.

If I decide to go with the 955cpu is there anything else I need to know or take in to account when changing and restarting the PC?

No,you don't need to do anything,if it works it'll work.

But make sure the mobo was flashed to the latest bios beforehand otherwise it won't recognize the CPU and boot.

retep888,

Thanks for your reply.

I have the the latest bios which I believe is rev 1301. I thought that there may be a problem with Vista (full retail version) maybe seeing a different processor or somthing of that nature?

As long as the mobo's bios recognize the new CPU and works, you're fine.

Vista will work, you might have a message at POST saying that CPU has been changed, you don't even have to reactivate Vista normally(I've upgraded and swap CPU on numerous times ,none of which had asked for reactivation).
