Can someone answer this question
If the battery on the motherboard has gone will this stop the computer from starting up?

The first thing that happensis, as the battery begins to fail, the time clock tends to read incorrectly.

It doesn't normally stop computer from starting.
However, as it provides power for the cmos bios chip when the computer is turned of, it may well have that effect if it is allowed to drain completely.

I've never had to replace a CMOS battery yet and my current motherboard is six years old.

Yes you may get an error message like "checksum error"

And if it gets that bad it totally loses the settings for hard drives or other items, it may not boot up.
