More Vista System Restore Woes

I have never been able to get system restore to work on my HP Vista PC bought last April. I can create system restore points fine, but i've never actually managed to restore to one and the error message is not helpful (could not restore your computer). Anyone got any ideas where to start on this one? I thought it was Norton at first but i turned that off and it didn't make any difference (I'm not keen to uninstall that unless I have to).

Where shoudl i start looking?

Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
Click on the Control Panel menu option.
Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
Click on the System menu option.
Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
Put a checkmark in the checkboxes next to each hard drive listed under the Create restore points automatically on the selected disks: section.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button.
System Restore is now enabled on your computer.

Yes, its already enabled. Can take checkpoints successfully, just can't restore to them. Any ideas?
