Monitor quality deteriorated

I have a Philips Monitor 170B4 with an Evesham Desktop PC. Its about 4 years old and I have not been unhappy with the quality. However I now also have a Dell Laptop (Latitude D630) and the screen quality is superb. The noticeable difference is the sharpness of the picture and the clarity of text. Both are running Windows XP. Has the quality of the Philips deteriorated with time and should this be expected?
Thanks.

Check screen resolution & colour quality in Display Properties > Settings - should be the set to the native res (usually 1280x1024) & 32-bit. G

Also, try updating your graphics card drivers & enabling ClearType click here . G

Remember to always run a LCD or TFT monitor/display at its native/default resolution for best results.

ClearType makes a big difference too - did you try it? G
