Monitor problem?

I'm having no end of trouble with my monitor. At first i thought it was faulty, as it kept flickering, fading, and then cutting out altogether. Then i noticed that it was happening at the exact same time when booting up the pc.As soon as it reached the stage of showing the desktop, the screen would go black, and go into standby mode.I have now changed the screen refresh rate from 85 hertz to 72, and this seems to have stopped it slightly, but it still shuts off after around 20 minutes.Could this be the monitor itself, or something that could be cured through the settings? Please help.Thanks.

How old is the monitor and is it crt or lcd?

It's CRT, and about 4 years old.

Is the 72 hertz the default refresh rate for that particular monitor? If it is then check for any updated drivers at the manufactuers website?
