Monitor only displays for a second

Hi folks. I gotta strange problem with a friends pc. She thought it wasn't booting up, but when I had a look, it is booting up but monitor displays each page of boot (BIOS, XP start screen, desktop) for a split second then go's blank. Once boot had finished if I either switched monitor off/on or unpugged/replugged to pc, it would again show the current screen for a second then blank again. The image whilst displayed for the split second looks clear and correct, just won't stay up.
Any ideas?
PS I'm afraid I don't have the full pc spec other than running XP Pro. (So I assume drivers shouldn't be a problem)

1. Check monitor cable and pins

2. try another monitor

3. ensure graphics card fully seated in slot.

If PC is running ok (you get to see a desktop then I expect something is wrong with the monitor.

Thanks Fruitbat. I'll check above, if no joy she can get warranty people out to sort it.
