Monitor not identified on starting up

I have just upgraded from 98SE to XP with SP2. On about 1 boot in 10, the Sony E200 monitor is not recognised, the display does not fill the screen, and Default Monitor is listed in Device Manager. A restart fixes the problem. Less frequently, the monitor is identified, but the Audigy 2 ZS sound card is not. Again, reboot fixes the problem. It appears XP is having problems identifying PnP devices. I have tried updating drivers by downloading from Sony, and also by letting Windows find its own drivers. Any suggestions will be most welcome.
