Monitor goes to sleep

I've just installed a new graphics card (Radeon 9250; 128mb)so I could play Civilisation IV. Yesterday, while playing the game the monitor switched off (went to sleep) but the game seemed to be still running as I could hear the audio. I couldn't do anything to get the picture back and had to reboot. The power management is set to 'never' go off regarding the monitor ,hard disk etc. Any ideas, please?

(i) It could be a faulty card. (ii) It could be acompatability problem. Is there with it a file of 'release notes' that discuss known compatabilities/incompatabilities.?
