I am running win 98se on a emachine emonster 550.
After operating well ok for many months, recently
after a holiday shut down the system on start-up
fails to display on the monitor the full range of colours - the red segment is missing - any advice
will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Assuming that the drivers are loaded correctly, check that the monitor cable (the one that attaches to the graphics card) doesn't have a bent pin.

Unplug the monitor video cable - both ends if it is not permanently wired to the monitor, check for damaged pins as suggested by MAJ and replace the cable. If that doesn't help, remove the graphics card and reseat it. If that doesn't help, then you most likely have a faulty monitor or graphics card. Without more sophisticated test equipment than most of us have at home, you can only really tell which by substitution with known good units.

You didn't say what type of monitor CRT or Flat Panel?
The advice already given is still relevent however.
